Derek Redmond’s hamstring injury might be one of the most touching moments in Olympic history. While running the 400-meter semifinals at the 1992 Olympic Summer Games in Barcelona, Great Britain’s Derek Redmond seemed ready to earn himself a spot in the final. Sadly for him, the injury bug struck at the worst possible moment. Redmond heard a “pop” in his right hamstring and went down very quickly. It was in that moment that one of the most memorable scenes in Olympic history unfolded — Redmond’s father realizing that his son was stuck in an unfortunate situation, went along with him on the track and helped him finish the race in front of 65,000 people. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, Hungarian weightlifter Janos Baranyai, while attempting to lift 148 kilograms (326.3 pounds), which resulted in the pressure forcing his elbow out of the socket, leaving his forearm to hang freely on an angle that no forearms should hang. And as he dealt with the pain of an out of place elbow, the aforementioned 326.3-pound bar landed on his back, adding injury to, well, injury.
