Google, the search engine that has become synonymous with internet searching, has an intriguing background that begins in a Stanford University dorm room. Google, founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, has grown from a tiny research project to a worldwide technology behemoth, influencing how we access and utilise information on the internet.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin were both PhD students at Stanford University in 1995 when they began developing a search engine named “Backrub.” Backrub employed a one-of-a-kind algorithm to assess the relevance and value of connections between web sites. This method, known as PageRank, transformed the search industry by offering more accurate and relevant search results than previous keyword-based search engines.

In 1997, Page and Brin registered the domain name “google.com,” a creative play on the word “googol,” which is a mathematical term for the number one followed by one hundred zeros. This moniker expressed their idea of organising and categorising the vast amount of knowledge available on the internet.

Google Inc. was legally formed in September 1998, with Page and Brin as co-founders. They opened its first office in a garage in Menlo Park, California, and the firm quickly grew. Google’s basic homepage, which included a simple search box and a logo, became a symbol of the company’s user-friendly design.

Google’s popularity skyrocketed as a consequence of its improved search results and the addition of novel features such as Google News and Google Images. Google AdWords, a revolutionary online advertising programme introduced by Google in 2000, allows firms to advertise on Google’s search results page based on keywords. Pay-per-click (PPC) advertising became a substantial source of revenue for Google, paving the route for its financial success.

The impressive financial performance of Google was a reflection of both the general and specific quick expansion of Internet advertising. For instance, global web advertising increased from from $6 billion in 2000 to more than $72 billion in 2011, whereas American newspaper advertising decreased from a peak of $64 billion in 2000 to $20.7 billion in 2011.

Since its inception, Google has invested a considerable sum of money to establish what it believes to be significant advantages in online marketing. For instance, in 2003 Google paid $102 million to purchase Applied Semantics, the company behind AdSense, a programme that allowed website owners to sign up for advertising to run different kinds of advertising on their websites.
