The FRI (Forest research institute) in Dehradun is a premier Institute styled in Greeko Roman Architecture by C. G. Blomfield. It is under Indian Council of Forest Research and Education(ICFRE). The main building is a National Heritage which was inaugurated in 1929 by then Viceroy, Willingdon. It is built over an estate of about 450 hectares and was listed for a very long time in the Guinness Book of Records, as the largest purely brick structure in the world. FRI has developed all equipped Laboratories, Library, Printing Press, Botanical Museum and Experimental Field areas for conducting forestry research. The Forest Research Institute campus hosts the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy(IGNFA), the staff college that trains officers selected for the Indian Forest Service(IFS).

More than half a dozen movies such as Krishna Cottage, Rehna Hai Tere Dil Main, Paan Sigh Tomar, Student of the Year, Yaara and Dear Daddy were majorly shot in the campus. Many of the TV commercial ads have also been shot here such as Bournvita etc.
